Digital Photography Courses Isle of Wight

There are two indoor training sessions, held at 8.30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings with accompanying visual presentations to illustrate the various points made. These are usually held in the upstairs room at the Wheatsheaf Hotel, Newport. If circumstances dictate, we will hold them elsewhere and you will, of course be advised and if necessary transported. There is a coffee break halfway and we usually finish around 10.00 p.m.

On Friday we will start the evening with non-technical subjects under the heading of "How to take better pictures with the simplest of Cameras" then move on to techniques that you can practise the following day with help available.

The Saturday evening session, "Taking control of your camera" takes you forward from using the fully automatic settings. It includes a little (painless!) theory and a demonstration of how the various camera controls interact. We then show you how you can use them to produce the images you had in mind. Again, we re-enforce it by practice the next day.

Practical Training takes place around the Island all day Saturday and until Lunchtime on Sunday. This will be followed by a short resume and chance to view some of your pictures before you are returned to the Cowes Ferry for your journey home. Our assembly / departure point for the day trips is outside the Wheatsheaf Hotel in St Thomas' Square and we leave at 8.00 a.m. so please take an early breakfast and buy your pack lunch from the Bakers, the Deli or adjoining Supermarket.

There are many places that we can visit on our photo travels and I have made a point of including plenty of "comfort stops" with the necessary facilities. If it rains hard, there are a number of "under cover" opportunities to keep the photos coming and enable you to continue to practice. I hope that what I show you of the island will encourage you to re-visit us over here.

There is full e-mail support for three months after your course and you will be given study notes to take with you. So you have no excuse not to take some really great images after you get home or take your next holiday abroad. E-mail some to me!

I will be running Intermediate Courses in the Autumn, including one as an introduction to Studio Portraiture and another as an introduction to Computer Enhancement of your images. This will feature the latest version six of Photoshop Essentials which is easy to learn and offers impressive new features for improving your work.

If you book a Photobreak with us or request it by email, I will, with your permission, advise you of these as they are introduced.

Ninety percent of the course is equally applicable to Film Cameras so that if that is what you use, please book a course and bring it along. I still enjoy using my 35mm X-Pan.

Any queries... just email or phone me. I hope that you decide to come over.

What this Introductory Course Covers

Friday Evening Training One Session

  • Health & Safety Issues
  • Composition
  • Traditional Rules
  • Rescuing the third dimension
  • The Sun Compass & Tide Tables
  • Colour Temperatures & Dynamic Range
  • Graduated Filters
  • ISOs and Fill in Flash
  • File Formats & Resolution.
These are all presented with the emphasis on their
practical application. Knowing the underlying theory

press the shutter, is what will improve your work.

Saturday Evening Training Two Session

  • Where it all started. The Camera Obscura
  • Lenses, Focal Length & Perspective
  • Focussing Options. Focus Lock
  • Apertures and Depth of Field
  • Shutter Speeds and resulting E.V.s

Sunday Lunchtime Course Summary

  • What will you practise when you get home?
  • How can the course be improved?
  • What did you learn?
  • Any questions?
  • The e-mail post-course support.

NOTE:
Not all of the features covered on the course are
available on very basic compact "point & shoot “
cameras. However, if you wish to move up later to
a more advanced model, it will help you in your choice.

Post-Course Back-up
Keep in touch by e-mail if you need advice.
